Summary of A Good Man is Hard to Find

This story began with a family who wanted to take a trip from Georgia to Florida. The family members were the father named Bailey, the mother, the son named John Wesley, the daughter named June Star, and the grandmother. At first the grandmother didn’t want to go to Florida because She wanted to visit her connections in east Tennessee, but even though she had tried many ways to change Bailey’s mind Bailey ignored her and finally they went to Florida together.

They took the trip with a car. The grandmother takes her cat named Pitty Sing with her by hiding it in a basket and put it underneath her valise. On their way, the grandmother talked about the good old days in the South. The white people used to have big plantation and beautiful grand houses. People in the south divided into two classes; white people and the black one. The white people used the black ones as slaves. The grandmother was very proud of herself to become the white one. She regarded the black people as the poor community. The grandmother respected the old ways of living and was angry with her grandchildren who did not behave properly. She said, “In my time children were more respectful of their native states, their parents and everything else.”
They also talked about Misfit the criminal who ran away from the Federal Pen (prisoner) with two of his friends; Bobby Lee and Hiram. They were afraid of the criminals and the grandmother said A Good Man is Hard to Find.
They arrived at Red Sammy’s Barbecue for the first time. They met the owner named Red Sammy, who managed the shop with his wife. After having a rest they drove off again, on the way the grandmother took a nap and then she woke up in Tombsboro and she remembered that there was a house on a plantation. The children wanted to see that house, but Bailey refused and the children were upset. The grandmother supported the children so Bailey turned down about a mile back and then they got on the dirt road. Then the grandmother realized that she was wrong because of that she upsetted her valise and the cat sprang up and clang to Bailey’s neck, Bailey was surprised and could not control the car and they had an accident. Not long after that came a car with the bandits, Misfit, Bobby Lee and Hiram. They threatened the grandmother’s family. They took Bailey, his wife, his son and his daughter including the baby into the forest and shot them all. Misfit aimed his pistol at grandmother. The grandmother tried to calm down Misfit not to shoot her but Misfit finally shot her. Everyone in the family was shot death

  1. A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O'Connor
. 1. The character in this story (grandmother) is represented a person who retained her Christian value system and resented changes in morality. I like the character of the grandmother, it is a good character; although, she must died cause that.
    2. The story happen in or taken place in Florida. I like this setting; although, it does not develop our mind, but it is easy to understood.
    3. Yes it does, the story tells about a good things, that is tells about the religious values. For example; through the character of grandmother author suggested that a person’s high religious values can lead her too feel superior and have misjudgment about good and evil.
    4. Yes it is, the story are reasonable and the story’s style is communicative of figurative, it is many use figurative language to explain something important to the reader, like a oral message and etc.
    5. I think the important event happen in this story is when the grandmother tries to flatter two men who kill her that he was a good man and that Jesus would help him. In this part contain religious values, when she will died she still remembering someone to remember of God.
